1. Kualoa Ranch

Nestled on Oahu’s stunning windward coast, Kualoa Ranch is more than just a scenic attraction; it’s a portal into the heart of Hawaii. This 4,000-acre private nature reserve has earned global fame as the filming location for blockbusters like “Jurassic Park” and “Jumanji,” and hundreds of other films, allowing visitors to step directly into the lush valleys they’ve seen on screen. But its magic runs far deeper than Hollywood.

This was the first activity I did on my trip and it definitely set the tone for my time in Hawaii. The ranch is a living, breathing piece of Hawaiian history and culture, dedicated to preserving the sacred land, or ʻāina, that has been stewarded by the same family for generations. A visit here offers an unparalleled blend of adventure and education. The landscape took my breath away, it felt as though my eyes were deceiving me… I just couldn’t comprehend or process the beauty of this place and how it made me feel.

You can soar on a zipline, cruise through Jurassic Valley on a UTV, or kayak in the peaceful Secret Island lagoon. It’s a hands-on, unforgettable experience that captures the wild spirit and profound beauty of Oahu, making it an essential stop for any and every traveler.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR VISITING KUALOA RANCH

Arrival:

  • Arrive 45 minutes before your tour starting time and check in with ticket office upon arrival.
  • You’ll need to show a Photo ID that matches the name on the reservation.
  • Go to UTV Tour Depot area to check in with your guide.

The Experience:

  • You’ll drive a UTV Raptor through Kualoa’s beautiful valleys and off-the-beaten-path locations for 2 hours rain or shine—so be prepared for some mud and stream crossings.
  • There’s no narration, but a guide will lead the group through the trails. If you want to avoid as much dirt as possible, I recommend arriving early… the closer you are to the guide (at the front), the less dirt and mud you’ll experience from the UTVs ahead.

Requirements:

  • Drivers must be 21 years or older and show a valid driver’s license at check-in.
  • Passengers must be at least 5 years old.
  • Safety helmets are provided and must be worn at all times and closed-toe shoes are recommended.
  • Upon check in, before departing on the tour all tour restrictions will be checked, if anyone does not meet the tour requirements, they would not be able to continue on the tour.

2. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

A visit to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is truly so much more than a snorkeling trip; it’s a commitment to experiencing one of Oahu’s most breathtaking natural wonders responsibly. Formed within a volcanic cone, this protected marine ecosystem is a shimmering, turquoise cove teeming with life. Its vibrant coral reefs are home to thousands of colorful fish, offering an unparalleled opportunity to swim in a living aquarium. Don’t worry it is absolutely beginner friendly, but as with every activity—you should always exercise care.

Thanks to ongoing preservation efforts, your experience here will be both incredible and sustainable. Before heading to the beach, you’ll watch a mandatory 9-minute conservation video as part of the educational briefing on learning how to protect the fragile reef. I highly recommend reserving the earliest time slot available, that way you can spend as much time as you want. I booked the 6:45am slot, left at about 2pm and it was pure magic

A trip to Hanauma Bay isn’t just a check on a bucket list—it’s a chance to witness the magnificent results of dedicated conservation, ensuring this jewel of the Pacific thrives for generations to come. Remember, advanced reservations are essential and often fill quickly, but I’m here to guide you through it.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR VISITING HANAUMA BAY

  • 48 Hour advanced reservations start at 7am daily (HST) and are highly recommended as tickets are limited but always in high demand.
  • Visit the Honolulu Parks & Recreation website for ticket reservations and time slot selection. Reservation holder must show ID and the confirmation tickets at the admission window.
  • Walk-in tickets are available upon opening (6:45am) but are extremely limited and must be used on the day of purchase. ALL members of your group must be present to receive their walk-in ticket.
  • Tickets cost $25 per person. Kids under 12 enter FREE.
  • Hanauma Bay is closed every Monday & Tuesday so that the fish and bay have 2 days of undisturbed rest.
  • Opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday from 6:45am to 4 pm. NO entry after 1:30 pm and guests must be off the beach by 3:30pm, and leave the parking lot by 4:00pm. The Park is also closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
  • Getting There: Uber is the most convenient way to get there as you can just hop out after arriving. Driving is also convenient but based on my experience the line for getting into the parking lot ($3 fee) even at 6:45am was super long and may delay your entrance time. Additionally, you can book the Waikiki Transportation Package
that offers round trip transportation from your hotel and includes snorkel gear.
  • What To Bring: towel, swimsuit and reef-safe sunscreen. Feel free to also bring small personal coolers, snacks and even small beach chairs and umbrellas. If you don’t have gear of your own, they’re available for rent on the beach along with all the snorkeling gear you need.

3. Sea Turtle Snorkel Adventure

This snorkel tour was just…WOW! When they say ‘swim with turtles in Hawaii’, THIS is what they mean! I did the most magical sea turtle snorkel tour off Oahu—here’s the tea!

I booked the 2-hour Sea Turtle Snorkel Adventure with Moana Waikiki. The ride out was gorgeous, with insane views of Diamond Head and Waikiki we even spotted dolphins. Within minutes we were swimming with honu (that’s Hawaiian for turtle!) they were absolutely breathtaking, swimming around like underwater angels!

We saw at least 8 of them and the water was crystal clear. The crew was super friendly and safety focused, the music was great and the vibes? IMMACULATE. After the snorkel, we got super lucky and spotted a whale… WHAT!? This was probably the most amazing tour I did on the entire trip.

4. Lanikai Pill Box Hike

For a sunrise you will remember for a lifetime, Lanikai Pillbox Hike is an absolute must-do. This moderate, roughly 1.6-mile round-trip trail ascends the Kaiwa Ridge, offering uninterrupted, jaw-dropping vistas of the windward coast. Your reward is the iconic view from the historic World War II bunkers (“pillboxes”) overlooking the twin Mokulua Islands and Lanikai’s famous turquoise waters—a picture-perfect moment worth every single step to the top.

To ensure a great experience, I’d encourage you to start your hike at least 30 minutes before sunrise (check your weather app based on the time of year you visit), to secure parking in the nearby residential area and to avoid the intense midday sun. Bring a flashlight for the pre-dawn climb, sturdy shoes for the often-steep and eroded sections, and of course water.

The panoramic beauty combined with a bit of history, and a rewarding physical challenge makes the Lanikai Pillbox Hike a quintessential Oahu adventure that perfectly captures the island’s charm.

5. Lanikai Beach

Often hailed as one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Lanikai is a vision of paradise that lives up to its name, which translates to “Heavenly Sea.” As an island girl myself, I can confidently tell you if you skip any other beach, you can’t skip this one – I went back a total of 4 times in a single trip (do with that information what you may). Its signature powder-soft white sand and impossibly turquoise waters, framed by the twin Mokulua Islands offshore, create a scene straight from a postcard.

Unlike many public beaches, Lanikai retains an exclusive, serene ambiance due to its residential location. Arrive early to secure limited street parking (or just uber) and experience the beach at its most tranquil. This is the perfect launch point for a kayak trip to the Mokes, and its calm, protected waters are ideal for swimming and stand-up paddleboarding.

Remember, there are no public facilities, or lifeguards so come prepared and take care. I recommend hitting the beach right after you complete the Pillbox hike to maximize your time since you’ll already be in the area. A morning spent at Lanikai, especially for a legendary sunrise, is less of an activity and more of a core Oahu memory.

6. Aloha Stadium Swap Meet

The Aloha Stadium Swap Meet is the biggest open air flea market on Oahu where treasures, tastes, and traditions come alive. From adorable souvenirs to handcrafted treasures, this is your one-stop shop for Hawaiian keepsakes. Whether it’s a shell necklace or a hand-painted ukulele, you’ll find the perfect memento to remember your trip. Dive into racks of aloha shirts, flowing dresses, and island-style accessories.

With over 400 vendors, the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet is a great experience, the local vendors sell everything from souvenirs to clothing to bags and food. If you need a quick bite, don’t worry, there are so many food options from smoothies to tacos, plate lunches and refreshing shave ice. It took us about 5 hours to get done with this place – it’s a fun experience you don’t want to miss.

7. Grand Circle Island Tour

If you’re visiting Oahu and want to experience the island’s most stunning sights in one unforgettable day, then the Grand Circle Island Tour might just be your perfect adventure.

The tour includes round trip transportation from your accommodation in Waikiki in a spacious, air-conditioned van. Our guide immediately set the tone with his infectious energy, sharing stories of Hawaiian legends, history, and hidden gems for the next 10 hours.

We stopped at Halona Blowhole, Makapu’u Lookout, Waimanalo Beach, China Man’s Hat, Waimea Bay, Macadamia Nut Farm, honestly there were so many scenic stops along the way and the commentary from the guide was amazing.

One of the best parts of this tour was seeing Oahu’s famous windward coast— absolutely unreal. For lunch, we had garlic shrimp and some mango smoothies, there was something there for everyone. If you visit in winter, you’ll be able to witness the North Shore’s massive waves. From breathtaking landscapes to fascinating stories, delicious food, and an amazing guide, this tour is an easy, fun way to see Oahu’s highlights in a day.

8. Kaka’ako Farmers Market

For a true taste of modern Honolulu, the Kaka‘ako Farmers Market is an essential Saturday morning ritual. Held in the vibrant, evolving heart of the city, from 8:00am to 12:00pm —it’s a bustling showcase of Hawaii’s incredible food scene.

You’ll find a vibrant mix of local farmers offering just-picked tropical fruit, artisans with handmade crafts, and some of the island’s chefs serving up innovative bites. I felt right at home delving into fresh, velvety poke and buttery taro rolls to gourmet coffee and malasadas, it’s a paradise for foodies (aka me, ha ha!).

To make the most of your visit, start the morning early — I also recommend having some cash on hand for smaller vendors. Go hungry, embrace the lively community atmosphere, and indulge in the creative, local flavors that make Oahu’s culinary landscape so uniquely delicious.

9. Pearl Harbor Memorial Park

A visit to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a profound and essential journey into the heart of modern American history. Honestly, I hadn’t planned on visiting, but after learning about so much of Hawaii’s history through other tours I decided to add this to my itinerary. The hallowed ground commemorates the pivotal event of December 7, 1941, where you can stand above the sunken USS Arizona and feel the weight of history in the quiet waters below.

The expansive park also includes the USS Missouri, the USS Bowfin Submarine, and the Pacific Aviation Museum, offering a comprehensive look at World War II in the Pacific. For a smooth visit, reserve your free tickets for the USS Arizona Memorial online well in advance, as they are released 60 days prior and are highly sought after. Arrive early, allow a full day to explore, and wear respectful clothing. It’s a moving, educational, and unforgettable experience that honors the legacy of courage and sacrifice.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR VISITING PEARL HARBOR

  • USS Arizona Memorial tickets are usually released 8 weeks in advance for $1 pp, however since this summer (July 2025) this process has been temporarily suspended due to ongoing preservation work on the USS Arizona.
  • Access will be on a first come, first served basis, or through the normal reservation process where reservations are released the day before.
  • Be sure to take printed or digital copy of your reservation ticket available to be scanned at check-in.
  • Alternately, if you despise stalking websites for release dates, you can book a hassle-free Pearl Harbor & City Tour that includes transportation to and from Waikiki and an in-depth city tour with a guide, or you can choose from one of the many Pearl Harbor packages they offer.
  • Bags aren’t allowed, but small clear pouches are. If u MUST take a bag, you can pay for storage before entering.
  • Pack light, bring sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes.
  • Be respectful and follow the rules.

10. Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail

For breathtaking coastal vistas without a strenuous jungle hike, the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail is a perfect Oahu activity. This beautifully maintained, fully paved path climbs gently up the island’s southeastern tip, offering unrivaled panoramic views of the windward coast’s turquoise waters and dramatic, rugged sea cliffs.

The trail is accessible to most, making it ideal for families with strollers and visitors seeking a manageable yet rewarding walk — and boy is it rewarding! Your destination is the charming, red-roofed 1908 lighthouse, perched picturesquely on the cliff’s edge is simply stunning – it took me about 30 minutes before I could put one foot in front of the other to keep going. I couldn’t help basking in the beauty. The winter months (roughly December through April) provide an extra spectacular bonus as the trail is one of the best land-based spots for viewing migrating humpback whales.

There is no shade on the path so to ensure an enjoyable visit, going early to secure parking and to avoid the intense midday sun is key, oh and definitely don’t forget your water. Without a doubt, the payoff from this hike is one of the most iconic and photographable views on the entire island.

TIP: Pay attention – there are several signs posted about theft so be mindful of your belongings in this area.

11. Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

Escape the buzz of the city and find profound tranquility at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, a 400-acre sanctuary nestled at the foot of the majestic Ko’olau Range. This garden, whose name means “to give peace and protection,” was designed for flood protection and delivers on its promise of serene beauty at its best. This was one of the first places on my list when planning my trip to Hawaii, and its beauty did not disappoint for even a second.

The moment you pass through its iconic, palm-lined entrance, the world falls away, replaced by a stunning landscape of lush lawns, a tranquil lake, and forested paths showcasing tropical plants.

It’s completely free to enter and best explored on foot to fully absorb the peaceful ambiance. Otherwise, drive slowly (in line with the recommended speed limit of course) to appreciate the views, and have your camera ready—the sight of the misty green peaks rising above the lake is one of Oahu‘s most photographed scenes. It’s less of a traditional attraction and more of a restorative experience for the soul.

12. Swim & Sail Cocktail Cruise

One thing about me, I love a good boat day and I always try to book a boat tour in every destination – this time it was a Swim & Sail Cocktail Cruise. We set sail at 2pm, drinks in hand, and the whole coastline laid out before us. There’s nothing quite like gliding past the majestic curve of Diamond Head from the water—it’s a perspective you just can’t get on land.
The best part? Kicking back in the boat’s netted lounges with a fresh, tropical cocktail in my branded mug that was included with my VIP ticket. The ocean breeze was pure magic. When the crew offered a swim stop, I couldn’t resist taking the plunge into that unbelievably blue water—it was the perfect, refreshing reset. It was one of those “pinch me” moments that truly captures the joy of being in Hawaii.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SWIM & SAIL CRUISE

Key Tips

  • This is a swim-and-sail experience (not a snorkeling tour), so bring your swimming skills to enjoy the water activities.
  • VIP tickets include a complimentary drink served in a souvenir cup to keep the vibes going.

13. Waikiki Beach

I’ll be honest, I’d heard all the talk before I went—that Waikīkī was overrated, too crowded, and too commercial. But you know what? I decided to see for myself, and I ended up having an absolute blast. Yes, it’s bustling, but there’s an electric energy there that’s contagious.

I found my perfect patch of sand early in the morning, watched surfers dance on long, gentle waves with Diamond Head in the background, and honestly, that view never got old. I spent the entire morning in the water just being present and awestruck by the fact that I felt as though I was in a real-life painting.

Was it packed? Sure. But sometimes the most famous places are famous for a reason. It’s a vibrant, living postcard, and I loved every minute of being in it.
